Hello. I'm from the internet: Twitter Facebook Tumblr Delicious Flickr LinkedIn

Blog: Stream of Thoughts

Now, people care...

Now that Congress seems destined to pass this interrogation/war crimes act, everyone is finally taking notice: the NYTimes has a strongly worded editorial [link], both Slate [link] and Salon [link] are running cover stories, and Congressional Democrats are finally speaking out [link]. But, tragically, it's too little, too late. This chilling legal analysis from John Mikhail at the Georgetown Law School Faculty blog illustrates some of the most insidious word-smithing of the new bill [link]. Please, at least make yourself aware of how serious this situation is.

Paul Rieckhoff Weighs in on Re-Defining Torture

Paul Rieckoff gives his take on this torture legislation in an OpEd for the NYTimes:

The success of America’s fight against terrorism depends more on the strength of its moral integrity than on troop numbers in Iraq or the flexibility of interrogation options. [link]

Paul is a fellow Amherst College grad, a combat vet, and the author of Chasing Ghosts: A Soldier’s Fight for America From Baghdad to Washington.

Glenn Greenwald, writing for Salon.com, nails it

Here's a Good Explanation of What's going on:

the military can imprison, and torture, a detainee forever without ever bringing the detainee before a military commission, and the detainee has no means at all to challenge his detention or the treatment to which he is subjected [link]

Please go read the entire post.

Where's the Outrage?

Our nation has quietly accepted that our government will torture and detain persons it claims are enemies of the state, at will and without recourse. Why isn't every person and every news outlet in the country screaming about this? Here's a little editorial from the WashPost:
U.S. violations of international human rights law can continue as long as Mr. Bush is president, with Congress's tacit assent [link]

Iran Countdown

As rumors abound about the possibility of the Dems taking back one or both houses of congress in November, I'm wondering what the near fate of the administration's Iran policy is? It certainly isn't new to wonder if the administration is actually foolish enough to take premature military action; retired Col. Sam Gardiner is convinced that it has already begun [link]. But, I wonder if the administration will open up an all out military offensive as an October surprise to try to take advantage of the incomprehensibly difficult position it will put congress in?

Keith Olbermann nails it again...

In case you missed Bush's press conference last Friday, Olbermann has the highlights [link]

The Problem is Yoo

John "Torture Memo" Yoo wrote an Op-Ed for the NYTimes [link]. You may remember Yoo from his wonderful memo on why it's ok to torture [PDF]. This is the tragically warped point of view that is at the core of all that is wrong with the Bush administration.
