Hipster Culture

The hipster culture/mindset is the result of two basic values that the parents of hipsters instilled in their children:

  1. Everything is cool.

  2. Everyone is unique.

The hipster lifestyle is a quest to find out if these tenets hold true.

Hipsters may not have happened by accident, but these days, they certainly take on a new meaning.

Hipsters were unique and cool. They were counter-culture enthusiasts, on a "quest" to live out those tenets. But counter-culture has become, well, culture. And I wonder if "Hipster' still means what it once did - more mindset and movement versus fashion[able] trend.

Perhaps Geeks are the 21st Century Hipsters.

I'd argue that the real issue is that the parents of hipsters (and millennials in general) taught their children that 'YOU are unique, and YOUR interests are cool'. It's a small difference, but I think the internal focus versus external focus is an important one.

(I don't mean to say that an internal focus is inherently negative - interest in charitable efforts because you like being thought of as charitable is functionally indistinguishable from taking action due to overwhelming empathy.)
